Big Brothers Big Sisters has four major fundraisers annually. They are: Bowl for Kids' Sake, Homes with Heart, Little Moments~Big Magic, and the Dos Mosca Fly Fishing Tournament.
Bowl for Kid's Sake (BFKS) Our 2006 Bowl For Kids' Sake fundraiser this yeas was a "Chili Bowl," held on March 4th at the La Plata Fairgrounds. With no bowling alley in town, we bowled with regulations size balls and pins that we purchased and had the lanes set up with hay bales. We'll also had a computer bowling game that teams could opt to do instead of the lane bowling.
The Lawn Chair KIngs played during the chili cook off, and all the chilis were delicious. There was a silent auction with some great prizes too. All in all, the event was a great success and tons of fun. All bowlers received a chili mug this year instead of a T-shirt.
Homes with Heart (HWH) Homes with Heart 2006 will have a new twist. After the winning drawing was chosen from participating KidTime students, Feeney Architects drew up the construction plans. This year the playhouse will be constructed, with materials donated by the local building community, by DHS students in the Shop Class. The Welding and Art Classes will also lend a hand. This year's playhouse will be a "cool castle" and will be on display in the Town Plaza parking lot from mid to late November through Christmas. BBBS board members will be selling raffle tickets at the playhouse, and a winner will be drawn on Dec. 23rd at 2pm. Tickets are $3 each or 4 tickets for $10. Dos Mosca Fly FishingTournament Eight teams of four anglers fish the Animas River for two days with professional fishing guides. The basic rules consist of two flys, 1 dry and 1 wet. Losing flies results in the loss of points! Keeping flies results in more points! Big Brothers Big Sisters joins forces with Duranglers Flies and Supplies to bring this wet and fun fundraiser to Durango. The 2006 event was a huge success. Thank you to all who participated. LITTLE MOMENTS ~ BIG MAGIC This is a relatively new fundraiser for us. In May we hold an information breakfast and invite community members to come and learn about our agency. We have a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple speak, as well as a Study Connection volunteer. We explain how our agency works, who we help, and the outcomes from our wonderful matches. We also talk about other ways you can be involved with BBBS. At the end of the breakfast, we ask attendees to consider becoming a long-term supporter of BBBS by making an annual pledge for up to five years. We have had a wonderful response to this fundraiser. Many who have attended have expressed how much they learned during the breakfast and also how hearing from actual "Bigs" made them realize the impact a match can have on a child.
Throughout the year, we also have smaller information sessions right at our office. If you'd be interested in attending one of these sessions, please give us a call.
Our work is as elementary as putting a friend in a child's life and as essential as putting hope in a child's future.
