Types of Programs.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We have been the leader in one-to-one youth mentoring for more than a century. Our programs are designed to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado was founded in 1984 by a group of local community leaders who saw a need for positive, adult mentors in the lives of the many promising youth in the area. We currently have Community-Based mentoring in both La Plata and Archuleta Counties, along with School-Based mentoring in La Plata County. In addition, we have started a High School Bigs program.

Who is a Big?

Being a Big doesn’t take a bunch of special skills, money, or creativity. A Big is simply someone who wants to make a difference in a child’s life by being a consistent friend. If you are capable of creating and maintaining a friendship with a child and like to have fun, then we want you! You too can start something and positively change the life of a child for the better, forever. Children are not the only ones who benefit. Our mentors find this experience not only fun, but very rewarding! The powerful influence of mentoring works both ways. Click here to get started.

Who is a Little?

Littles in our program are boys and girls between the ages of 6-17 (1st-12th grade) who are facing challenges in their personal, social, academic lives. They are great kids with a lot of potential to succeed in life, but need extra support due to circumstances often out of their control. Littles voluntarily participate in the program with the full support of their parent/guardian. If you are a parent/guarding who would like to enroll your child in one of our programs, click here to get started.

Matching

We strive to make strong matches that last a long time. Although we ask for a minimum of a one year/school year commitment from our volunteers, we hope that every match will last for years and years because a great friendship has developed. We take the time to carefully match Bigs with Littles we think are compatible together by looking at preferences, interests, and personalities amongst other things. Making these matches, and performing all the background work involved with them, is possible because of donations from people like you.

Role models make an impact

National and local studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs or commit crimes. In fact, the success of children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters was proven in a nationwide randomized study. The great thing about these relationships is that children are not the only ones who benefit. Our mentors find this experience not only fun, but very rewarding! The powerful influence of mentoring works both ways.
